Can Breathing Help Cure Panic Attacks

When people try to cure panic attacks a common method used is breathing into a paper bag. However, research has shown that this can dramatically increase your CO2 levels and can adversely affect your health. In fact reducing CO2 levels can actually cause a panic attack and lowering your oxygen blood levels can be fatal in a worst case scenario.

So is breathing therefore not advisable when trying to stop panic attacks?

In fact breathing is well documented by sufferers and doctors alike to help reduce the attack and will commonly help quickly. There is a better way to use your breathing to help cure panic attacks.

Breathing and Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can develop as your diaphragm tightens. Your diaphragm as it increases in tension will restrict your breathing. When you breathe in your energize your body and when you breathe out you release stress.

If you breathe less efficiently your will also increase in stress and eventually a panic attack may develop. In these situations changing your breathing rate can help stop panic attacks.

In an attack you will notice that your heart races, breathing rates change, you perspire, feel dizzy and may even have heart pains. These symptoms are distressing to say the least.cure panic attacks

The diaphragm which is your breathing muscle can contribute a lot to these symptoms. The diaphragm for instance has the same pain pattern as your heart, so if it tightens it will simulate a heart attack – chest pains, perspirations, dizziness, breathing changes and more.

So slowing your breathing rate can help to reduce diaphragm tightness and hence stop panic attacks quickly. But breathing into a paper bag is not the moist ideal way to achieve this, and can as said above cause other problems including creating another attack due to the CO2 levels.

How to Cure Panic Attacks

A simple breathing technique that can help cure panic attacks is based on your ability to slow your breathing rate, hence reducing diaphragm tightness. Breathing into a paper bag will not achieve this.

All you need to do is count your breathing. As you breathe in count one, breathe out and then breathe in and count two. Continue this until you count thirty six cycles of breathing.

This can help stop panic attacks from two angles. It will slow your breathing rate and reduce diaphragm tightness, and it will also help to change your conscious thought pattern as you focus on counting your breathing rather than the stress that triggered your panic attack.

It is a simple technique that doesn’t change the depth of your breathing so will not alter your CO2 or oxygen levels adversely and hence not cause any unwanted side effects. It will however help top stop your panic attack.

You can also use this type of technique regularly which can help to keep the diaphragm muscle relaxed and help prevent future attacks. But to cure panic attacks long term you still need to deal with the underlying causes of your attacks.

Techniques as above will help to stop panic attacks but tends to be temporary measures. You still need to use a program that deals with the underlying causes and help you cure panic attacks permanently.
