Most people will get a stress headache at least once every so often but there are also people for whom they are common occurrences. A headache can ruin your day and make it difficult to do the things that you need to do. There are a lot of remedies for stress headaches out there but if they happen on a chronic basis, make sure you see your doctor. Most of the time, however, small changes in your daily habits and home remedies can be good enough to get rid of a tension headache.
Treating stress and tension headaches is most commonly done by using aspirin or some other over the counter medication. There are a lot of options here and some are going to be more effective than others, depending on what kind of headache you have and how severe you are feeling it. It is important to understand, however, that taking medication for your headache makes you more prone to something called the “rebound” headache. This happens when the medication wears off and your headache comes back. That’s the reason that it is a bad idea to exceed the recommended dose for any medication that you take for your headaches without first asking your doctor whether doing so would be wise.
You probably don’t think that your posture plays into your headaches, but regular bad posture could be causing some of them. It’s a fairly common problem with people who work at computer stations for long periods of time. Leaning forward with your head can be especially problematic, as this causes extra pressure on the neck and back. You want to keep a feel out for any extra tension in your neck and shoulders as you sit or walk around. Aside from working on sitting up straight, you may want to get regular massages or chiropractic treatments.
There are also other systems, such as the Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais Method that work specifically on healthier posture. You can try to find a practitioner for yourself or look through videos posted on the net to find more information on these techniques.
A great way to sooth a stress headache is to give yourself a foot bath with some hot water. You can use your own bathtub for this, a big bucket or you can fork over some money for one of the foot spas that you can find online or in most pharmacies. This is a good treatment to use at night before going to bed. If you purchase your own foot spa, you can set it to your comfort level but remember a good temperature is hot but not scalding. Allow your feet to stay in the foot bath’s water for between ten and fifteen minutes. Not only is this great for your feet, it helps your whole body relax and can prevent or even cure your stress headaches. There are lots of ways to treat your stress headaches and you can start with one of the methods we’ve talked about here. For the most part, the best way to keep these kinds of headaches away is to make an honest effort to lower your stress levels even in stressful situations. This may not be easy, but you can train yourself to not let life stress you out so much. There are lots of benefits that come with lowering your stress and having fewer headaches is just one of them.
