Being able to think about oneself from a positive perspective is very important when it comes to happiness and an overall sense of well-being.
A lot of people develop patterns of negative thinking without even understanding what they are doing. Before they know it, they are viewing their life events from a mostly negative viewpoint. This way of thinking can really keep a person “in a rut” with regards to many aspects of their life.
When I was in the depths of my anxiety, I would often find myself thinking about my problems while at the gym, while eating dinner, while studying, and even at parties. Negative thoughts about my life followed me wherever I went.
As you can guess, carrying around a load of stress, anxiety and doubt can really take a toll on a person. My negative thinking and negative emotions, over time, really took a toll on me too.
In order to begin feeling better, I had to start reprogramming how I thought about things. My habitual thought processes had to change. A new more healthy way of thinking had to be learned.
Learning new ways of thinking about your current situation is the only way to be OK with how you are right now. There is no need to struggle and work hard at this. You literally do not have to do anything more than make small, gradual, and consistent changes in the way you think about yourself and the events in your life.
Instead of seeing yourself and your life from a negative point of view, you need to begin to move towards seeing yourself from a positive point of view. To expect to quickly and simply “jump” to the positive end of the spectrum is not only unreasonable but also impossible. So move slowly and don’t expect to feel wonderful right from the get-go.
It might help to envision for a moment that you are an elite marathon runner. You know that if you tried sprinting to the finish, you would surely collapse early on in the race. However if you pace yourself and take the race one step at a time, you will eventually succeed in reaching the finish line.
Although you may want to sprint through this process, and begin feeling wonderful right now, it is impossible for you to do so. Instead you should approach this process one step, one thought at a time. The good news is that with each step you make in the right direction, you will notice that you feel slightly better.
Make small improvements in your thinking, and relish in the relief gained through each improved thought.
